[003596] WOLFGANG TILLMANS / PHILLIPPE STARCK. Visionaire No 28 - Bible -
Including the Plastic Phillippe Starck Case. New York: Visionaire, 1999. First
Edition - Limited.. Injection molded acrylic case. Fine Visionaire No 28 - Bible
- "Our millennium issue: "the greatest story ever told" retold in images by
modern-day artists and photographers. The intent was to make an issue that was
visually provocative but not blasphemous or gratuitously shocking. We worked
closely with Dr. Royal Rhodes, professor of religion at Kenyon College, who
helped us excerpt passages from the King James Bible. Mario Testino photographed
Adam and Eve (dressed in Martine Sitbon and poised to prune with Hermes hedge
clippers); Wolfgang Tillmans contributed the Crucifixion; Andreas Gurskys image
of a rave became the Exodus; Mary Ellen Mark envisioned a modern day Mary and
Joseph; and Steven Meisel imagined the Apocalypse in a series of eerily
foreboding fashion images inspired by the painter Odd Nerdrum. As if tackling
the Old and New Testaments wasnt already enough, Visionaire collaborated with
industrial designer Philippe Starck to create special packaging for the issue.
His concept? A molded-plastic "energy sphere." The case was a major undertaking
as well as a technical challenge, and there were times when it looked like it
would take a miracle to get it produced. But several months after conception,
The Bible appeared in all of its glory." Limited edition of 6000 copies - this
is number 2159 - The acetat box is really fine nearly as new, the book was a bit
tight in ithe box and therefor it has some traces from the bit narrow case.
